Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs)
is an umbrella term to describe the many emotional challenges that can arise during pregnancy and the first year postpartum. These conditions cause emotional and physical symptoms that can make it hard to enjoy life and function well.
Anxiety and Depression: Anxiety and depression
are the most common PMADs and can develop during pregnancy or postpartum or may have developed earlier in life. People living with anxiety and depression may experience persistent worry, guilt, panic, sadness, hopelessness or a lack of enjoyment. Changes in sleep patterns and appetite can also indicate anxiety and/or depression. These feelings can get better with treatment.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Perinatal obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
involves repetitive unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (Compulsions) that often relate to safety or harm. Sometimes these are intrusive, frightening and scary to talk about. Perinatal OCD is quite common, (7-11% of pregnant people) and highly treatable with effective therapy and medication.
Birth Trauma or PTSD:
Birth can be an exciting, exhausting and life changing experience. Parents who’ve experienced difficult or traumatic birth experiences may notice that they relive these memories through nightmares, flashbacks, avoidance or increased anxiety. With effective support and intervention, PTSD can be treated.
Bipolar disorder
is a condition characterized by extreme mood highs and lows. During high moments, individuals can feel overly excited, energetic, insightful, impulsive, or irritable. These times are often followed by periods of lower or depressed mood. Bipolar episode may be triggered by a severe lack of sleep and can be accompanied by losing touch with reality (also known as psychosis) in some cases. With expert assessment and treatment, bipolar disorder can be treated effectively and individuals can thrive in parenthood and beyond.
Postpartum Psychosis
is a serious and rare medical emergency affecting 1-2 per 1,000 postpartum clients. During this time, the parent loses touch with reality (though this can fluctuate). Symptoms may include hallucinations, delusions, and severe confusion. Immediate evaluation and treatment are critical to the parent and family’s wellbeing. With effective and immediate evaluation and treatment, recovery is possible.
